hmm, something is wrong with her xD. What happened to her, I just found this pic, while I was googling Regards, Che.
what happened there Ship in picture is the venerable Warspite. Veteran of WWI (including Jutland), and numerous WWII battles, especially in the Mediterranean. She broke loose whilst under tow to the breakers yard, and is shown aground off the coast of Cornwall. 23/04/47 (St. Georges day) she broke her tow off Prussia Cove near Land End and ran aground. Not salvaged until 1950, then beached near Marazion, and gradually scrapped. - As she did not go down in battle, and that's despite taking on the High Seas Fleet at Jutland (her rudder jammed - and not for the last time), and also the then new fangled German guided bombs in the Med. in WWII, she cheated the ship breakers by breaking loose, and I can't think of a better way for the old lady to go..... (Vanguard also tried, but made her move too early in the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour).
Funny how it seems like some old girls just arnt ready to give up yet. Side note: What do you guys think is a proper way for a ship of war to be laid to rest these days ? Sinking for artifical reef/Target practice ? Or Sent to the breakers ? I personall like the reef/target practice method. I hate to see good ship be torn apart or sit abbandond to rust. Id rather see her fade away gracefully and with some puprose in Davy Jone's locker.
I like the museum idea but it's cost prohibitive in most cases. Other than that, the reef idea is the most useful.
Probably wasn't a runner for poor old Warspite. She'd had a very eventful life and by 1944 it was catching up with her. Still we should have hung on to one battleship I would have gone for one of the Nelsons since, let face it, they did look unque.
i never liked the design of the Nelson and Rodney. her main canons stand forward. what if she's damaged and has to turn away from battle. the 152 mm canons on her aft side don't give enough irepower to hold of an enemy battleship, closing in for the kill.
N&R were the battleship equivalent to that heavyset guy in the bar with a broken nose, cauliflower ears and arms like hams. Are you really going to go over and tell him he's ugly?
What happened to her 2nd funnel? She had 2 of those smokestacks in the early days! http://www.angelfire.com/yt2/WWShips/En ... story.html I know they made 1 funnel out of 2 but it doesn't seem to be much larger...anyhow it was a space saver!
i also thought that but it seems that she was modernized (again) after the war. this is a picture dating from the 50's
Well, being as other bits are also missing (guns, for example) is it possible that 1 funnel was already removed? I can't think why, but it is a possibility...
Warspite had two funnels trunked into one during one of her inter-war refits. At the base (hidden by superstructure) the uptakes make the funnel very wide, but it narrows to a "normal" appearance above that. She didnt get any post-war refit as she was slated for disposal as soon as she was no longer needed. Tom
By the time she got to D-Day she was down to 15kts and 6 main guns. She was never fully repaired after nearly being sunk by German glider bombs.
Foun this pic ( i think inter wars) but here the funnel seems to be bigger than in the end! http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Mar ... rspite.jpg http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Mar ... utland.htm http://viribusunitis.fw.hu/Warspite.jpg http://www.spruso.com/1RN%20Ships.htm
