my question is what if the allies used D company of the British 6th airborne in operation market garden. D company was the company of glider troops used to capture the Caen Canal Bridge and the Orne Bridge. if i remeber right this company was not used in market garden because it took heavy cassualties in Normandy after D-day. what if the allies pulled D company off the line after d-day and used them in operation market garden to capture some of the British opjectives.
Very unlikely one company would be taken into a different division -- Arnhem was British First Airborne Division, not the 6th Also, a big difference between landing gliders on top of a bridge in relatively open country and on top of a bridge in an urban area -- the result would probably be a complete wipe out before the enemy got involved! The problem was not the capture of the bridge at Arnhem -- that was done on the first day, it was support, particularly from XXX Corps, who took too long to get there, and also from the rest of 1st, which was cut off from the single batallion holding the bridge. As a more plausable "what if", what if a drop had been made between Nijmegen and Arnhem on the first day (Polish Para Bde and some of 1st Airborne, perhaps) with a smaller drop over the Rhine to dash into Arhnem and seize the North end of the Bridge. With both ends of the bridge held, and better resupply opportunities from the south, maybe the operation would have succeeded? Tom
I do not believe one company would have made that great of a difference. The Polish 1st Independant parachute Brigade was dropped late because of a lack of aircraft. Operation Market Garden was a two part operation. First part is Market which was done by the Americans which was successful and the latter Garden which the British failed to hold.
