Hoping you guys can help me...

I found an entry on a Service Card for a Soldier in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division that says:

"Rd to Pvt FR Cpl PER RSO 42, MAY 15/44"

CPL & Red to Pvt Comment-101.jpg
I have been told that "RSO" stands for "Regimental Special Order" but I cannot find anything on RSO 42 or any variation of Special Order 42, Order 42, etc.

And, if this is a Special Order, that did "not" involve moving to a new Regiment, why would there be a reduction from Corporal all the way to Private?? Did he Tick somebody off???

Really hoping somebody can shed some light on this.

    Thanks,

Try Regimental Standing Orders. The Corporal slot could have been temporary.

Regimental Standing Orders keep pointing out the "Royal Army". Royal Welch Fusiliers to be Known as Regimental Standing Orders (R.S.O.'s)
Don't see a lot of reference to U.S. Army wwii Regimental Standing Orders

I believe it is "Regimental Special Order". It's more common to see something like "16 INF SO 42, 15 May 44". There isn't enough information in the snippet posted to determine the reason for the reduction in rank. The only thing we know for sure is that it took place sometime after 15 May 44, and he was reduced 2 ranks (Cpl. to Pvt., instead of Cpl. to Pfc.).

You are not likely to find special orders online. It may be possible to find them in the 16th Infantry records held by the NARA at College Park MD.

NARA will tell you how much copies of such orders would be before you're committed. It's worth a shot to check.
