    Well, they were only facing unarmed civilians. They could have pulled off the same results with a platoon of armoured cars.

    that is not the point my friend.

    In the Chinese mind,you make an example of something or someone,you do it with such ruthlessness and skill that you leave your external enemies stunned and your internal one,well,dead.

    This was in 1989. Newer tanks might not have been available at the time. Or not prioritized. I think the David and Goliath sense of the picture is conveyed, 40 year old tanks or not.

    But innovation is historically not as encouraged in Communist societies as it is in Capilatistic ones.

    But tanks are far more intimidating. Armoured cars are just a lorry with a turret on, tanks are unstoppable beasts that can grind over the bodies of humans and barely notice.

    btw - does China have any armoured cars? I really do not know.
