Good info on the link. Some there I was familiar with, some were not. Now I have some more information and units to dig up! Thanks for the tip.

Apologies for not going through all 850 odd posts in case someone has mentioned it already.

Given the choice I would have served in Dad's Army :D

Thankfully, most armies were desperately short of cannon fodder so you'd get your wish. A reminder that you should be careful what you wish for.

I want to be a Red army rifleman, preferably in a penal battalion or in a "tank rider" section in 1941-1942.

If I had to be in the Red Army, and had a choice, then I'd volunteer to be a laison to one of those all-female companies....

Nice try, but the all-female unit would be the better choice by far.

You lot who would like to be in the thick of it and risk death are nuts. Give me the Army Pay Corps at Aldershot Barracks any day.

I wouldnt want to be in but I would like to have some sort of TV screen that would let me watch the Red guards divisions in the Baltic campaign 44-45. They were a fascinating lot.

There is only 1 place to be when the bell tolls... And that's running across the runway to go strap on your Spitfire and go pick a fight.:aa_uk::stickpoke::aa_germany:

I believe the Crete operations and Operation Market Garden (British perspective) have not been very highlighted within media, so don't pointchyo finger at me. hahah.

But, regardless of what I post, Band of Brothers kicks ass. I have yet to see A Bridge Too Far, however I just got Patton in the mail :D

I would also have loved to have been Vasily Grigorevich, the famous Sniper of Stalingrad

Most of the movie "A Bridge Too Far" IS from the "British perspective".

Yes, but the jump scenes were great! I think that movie could use a make-over now.

Really? Having the ability to look at your victims face? Having the ability to know that he is not "enemy" but a person? Having the knowledge of killing a man that never got to experience marriage? Never went to college?

I have though about it as well. War is not about prestige.

So... plenty of boys mean to live for ever huh? I would not want to be in any place where I can get my balls shot off.

I am no soldier, but I know enough to tell you this: Being in the army is called SERVING for a good reason. It is not about what you want and where you want it. You are to follow orders, salute people, live in filth, fight, and if necessary, die.

Patriotism, thirst for adventure or glory are all reasons as good as any. But one should think carefully about what just what one is signing up to. It isn't what most people on this thread think it to be, anyhow.
