We are sorry to report that Wing Commander (Retd) John “Jack” Howard Simpson, OBE, DFC, AE of Bray, Co. Wicklow died on Friday the 30th August 2019. Jack died peacefully, in the wonderful care of the staff at Roseville Nursing Home, Bray. The much loved husband of the late Phyllis and father of the late Michael; Jack will be sadly missed by his loving family, son Ronnie, daughter Wendy, adored grandchildren Michaela, Julie and Melanie, daughter-in-law Gail, son-in-law Ernest, extended family and loyal friends.
Jack served in several operational theatres, Aldergrove, Gibraltar, North Africa, Malta, and Italy during World War II, with the Royal Air Force (RAF). He always wanted to fly aeroplanes and started to fly at weekends at Sydenham Belfast. Jack had about 60 flying hours done just before war was declared and was then called up for full time service. During the war Jack was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), as well as being Mentioned in Dispatches (MID) for his gallantry.
During his life he was a keen member of The Royal British Legion (TRBL) and held the appointment of President of the Irish Metropolitan Branch, within the Republic of Ireland. His commitment to the Royal Air Force and dedication to the Royal Air Forces Association Republic of Ireland was absolute. Jack will be sadly missed by all members and the branch send condolences to his family at this difficult time."
