WW2 buff here and I'm in the brainstorming process for a historical fiction. Looking for it to begin in the mid-30s (in the brown shirts era) and show an individuals or an family's struggle dealing with the new power. I have a few ideas but lots of research is still to come. Great questions! Not overly religious And yes, to build up to some resistance, once their fears are realized from hearing stories from non-state run media.
How about the children? They'll be in the Hitler Youth or League of German Girls, since it was mandatory.
Urban or rural setting? Many children in smaller communities did not belong to a Youth movement due to the lack of enthusiastic and committed leaders.
They should know Nazis. If they''re going to be resisters, they should have at least been questioned about their beliefs. If they're urban, they should have witnessed or been caught up in some of the clashes between Nazis and communists.
Scenario of long time friends and neighbours now regarded as enemies of the Reich eg. Jews and Communists. Do you put your family first even though it goes against all your ideals or resist?
