    Kurosawa's tale is told in the 2012 book "All the Emperor's Men: Kurosawa's Pearl Harbor"

    That's possible but certainly not proven. Indeed there are as have been pointed out a number of Yamamoto quotes that would suggest that it is at least partially based on fact. Clearly not 100% correct but whether or not it was based to at least some extent on some thing(s) he said is still an open question.
