103rd Infantry WWII New Georgia

I am looking for any and all information, pics, or personal accounts from vets or those researching vets who served in that unit (103rd infantry) during the battle for New Georgia. My father-in-law served there his name was Jerome B. Goldstein.

I am looking for 103rd Infantry Regiment of the 43rd Infantry Division (Winged Victory) that was in the Pacific Theater. My father-in-law served in the 103rd Infantry, Company G during Operation Cartwheel, he was wounded 14 August, 1943 on New Georgia. I have done quite a few general searches on the 103rd, but I would like to get more information about Company G's movements during the battle and possibly even individual accounts. I don't know if its possible to get to that level, but, any help you could give me would be appreciated.

This seems to be an old thread, but i am looking for similiar info. My great uncle George Dudley was with the 103rd regiment. He was wounded July 25th 1943 near Munda. He later died in 1945 as a result of his wounds. I am also looking for any battle details that he may have been invoved in. Any info would be appreciated.

New to forum. My dad served with 43rd Cavalry Recon Troops Co A with 43rd Div. I have his picture album from the army Camp Shelby Ms. I'll look up pictures from this post. He crossed the Pacific on the USS President Grant Google USS President Grant. My dad cut hair to make extra money. I made a video of his stories couple years before his passing in 2005. My research found that there's books at Camp Blanding Museum in Florida. Bought a book their company commander wrote on his unit there for $26.00. The division went to N. Zealand for R&R where he met my mother. Brother born Hamilton New Zealand. I've attached a picture of the President Grant where my dad cut hair for the guys on the stern of this ship.

I have read your last post with interest as I am presently researching the 43rd Division. I'm looking for any sign of a man named Harold or Harry Preston who was stationed in New Zealand in 1933/44. Can you tell me where the Cavalry Recon Troops were based in the US and are there any books with group photos of the troops which made up the 43rd Div?

The 43rd originated out of Rhode Island. My dad tok basic at Camp Blanding Florida. A good source of information might be found at the museum there at Camp Blanding. I called them ordering the book on my dad' unit, 43rd Cavarly Recon Troops. They then went to Camp Shelby in Miss. did manuvers in N.C. ans S.C. From Camp Shelby, went by train to San Francisco, crossed Pacific on the President Grant. My dad drove an M8 scout car company A. Another source of information is the 43rd Infantry Division Veterans Association located in Rhode Island. My dads book from Camp Shelby is at other house in Conyers Ga. I'll be there tomorrow and I'll see if I can find picture of Mr Preston in it. On another post I found a book on the 43rd Infantry Division at Amazon.com paperback for $17.95. Also google WWII troop ships and find the President Grant shipping dates. My Camp Shelby book has photos of everyone and individual companys, band, anti-tank co's etc.. I'll keep you posted.

MNMike 21 and ceejay. I signed my dad up with the 43rd ID Veterans Association. Their first newsletter he got, That's how I found out about the 43rd book at museum at Camp Blanding. Theirs someone who is or has written a book on the 43rd, I believe his dad was with the 103rd Reg. Yes MDJ696, I live in Auckland, just north of Hamilton. I was down in Hamilton for two days at the beginning of this month and will probably be back near the end of the month for another short visit. If your Mum was a Kiwi you probably still have family there, do you?

 

She was from Scotland running an all boys school during WWII. Brother born in Hamilton. I've got my dad's picture album Camp Shelby 103rd Infantry 1942. I checked Co G, closest I could come is a private William R Gordon. Sgt Arthur Grivois, no corporals in G listing. Their commanding officer was 1st Lt Carleton E. Fisher. I'll keep checking. It goes through Co M, not counting attached units.

 

Model 8. Would yopu know what company his was with? Here's my dad on an army motorcycle, Camp Shelby.

 

Sorry, I have very little info. This man was my Uncle's father. Harold Preston was killed in October 1944. This is a classic case of a Kiwi girl who became pregnant to an American serviceman and the only division left in NZ late enough in 1944 was the 43rd. I would love to locate the Preston family but just a photo of the man would be really nice.

 

It's going to take some time to check names in book. My dad was with Co C, according to him, took a test and ended up in Recon. According to him, it beat walking. One of the funniest things he said-I got him a segment of Victory at Sea, Battle of Leyte Gulf, while we were watching it, I asked him if anything looked familiar(beach landing), he said yes, but he didn't remember hearing any of the music while there.

 

At least he had a sense of humour and the war didn't mess his mind up completely.

 

Model 8. I found your great uncle George H. Dudley. He shows up with Company F. These are quite small pictures and I'll see what my scanner can do.

 

MNMIKE21. I don't show any Goldstein in Company G. Keep in mind my book was made in 1942, but I'll keep looking at other companys.
