This came from an infantryman with the 186th in New Guinea. Can someone tell me which weapon it was used in?
    Thanks,

Is the base of the projectile about 1/2inch in diameter? It looks likes a .50 cal.

I do think that that is a personal question Sir.. Sorry reminded me of a Monty Python skit :D. It should be a little over 5 inches.

I'm not so sure - without dimensions it's hard to tell. I have an inert .50 on my desk, and somehow the proportions of it look different to the round shown in the pic.....

Entire length is just over 3-1/4" and largest diameter is approx. 1/2."

    3 1/4"..then it is not a .50 cal.
I dug out a .50 cal and I am with you, Martin, the projectile doesn't look the same.

.30 cal. then. Though the length given is 3.34 in for that caliber.

Looks like a .30-06 round or the similar Nato 7.62 round of post war. This was the standard US round for most small arms. Of course this could change with what is stamped on the bottom of the round too.

Just from looking at it, I'd say a 30 cal. Probably from a rifle or machine gun (infantry); I'd say K98K or something similar.
