Hello all,
I am seeking any info about Camp Grant in Illinois. I know my dad was there for a time during WW2, and I think he received M.P. training there. My dad's name was Lawrence (Larry) Barenthin and he served in the Army 1941-1946. He was in Normandy and later in Germany. I am really hoping someone out there might have known him back then.

Thanks for any info!!!

I was just looking at my dad's discharge paper, and it had some info that I hope someone can "translate" for me:

Line 6 says: 1613 SCU Co A War Dept Pers Ctr

Line 25: PLACE OF ENTRY INTO SERVICE: Fort Des Moines, Iowa
(Where and what was this place?)

Line 30: MILITARY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY AND NO.: Military Police 677

Thanks for any help! I am very glad to have found this website!!

Fort Des Moines Museum

Military Police 677 - He was a military policeman (an MP) In the movies when soldiers would get to fighting each other in a bar and then another group would show up with white helmets and billy clubs. That second group were MPs. They did other things as well, directing traffic, guarding prisoners, base and transit security and other civilian police duties.

My brother and my wife's uncle both took basic training at Camp Grant (Now Rockford, IL Industrial area) before my brother's eventual deployment to Europe as a medic and wife's uncle to the pacific as a cook.

Check with your state's Historical Society, they're used to fielding this kind of question.
