I am seeking photos of B17s in formation with fighter escort for my website. Any photos will be credited and, of course, appreciated. b17sam
Actually not an easy thing to find - plenty show vapour trails, but sparse aircraft detail. Still looking........
I don't have any. I have one the purports to show 17s and 51s in the same frame, but you need an electron microscope to see the fighters, if they are actually there. It is a distant shot, like maybe made from different squadron
Mr Sam, Could you describe your thoughts aobut flying through something like this? I can only imagine the terror, tempered by your training and staying with your job.
Mr. Slipdigit My primary reaction while visiting Hitler's 1944 3rd Reich with its delightful tourist attractions such as Berlin, Hamburg, Merseberg, etc. (see full list with dates in B-17 B-24 Pictures Information 8th Air Force Flying Fortress Liberator Ploesti Schweinfurt Merseberg Berlin missions) was to grit my teeth and keep an extremely tight asshole. The friendly citizens in each town and city never failed to greet us with large floral displays of flak, barrage flak, box flak, tracking flak, etc., but I never saw such a thick and uniform welcome as displayed in your photograph. I may be wrong, but in my opinion, I believe a good bit of the flak in the photo came from brush and ink. Please notice the 17s cruising blithely through all the flak with no visible damage And what a pisspoor formation. b17sam
Using a German '88' as an example, has anyone ever calculated the 'effective' range of the schrapnel of an 88 air-burst? John
