FIRST BATTALION NINETEENTH MARINES, THIRD MAR DIV,
IN THE FIELD,
9 December, 1944.
From: CO, 1st Bn
To : CO, 19th Mar.
Subject: Report of Operations, November-December, 1943.

3. For the most part the equipment of the battalion held up very well, considering the operating conditions and the servioing facilities available. The six by six (6x6) dump trucks performed especially well. There were practically no mechanical failures among the twenty-seven dump trucks operated by this battalion. It is recommended that they all be equipped with half tracks. The three trucks that were so equipped proved themselves invaluable.

Anybody know if this was actually implemented? Or if there was another system developed that precluded the need for this?

'Half Tracks' can mean looped 'temporary' tracks wrapped around the driven wheels on conventional trucks when extra traction's required. The style wasn't that uncommon, and the phrase "equipped with half tracks" makes me wonder if this is what was done.

But if they mean 'real' Halftracks the idea knocked around the world for much of the 20's and 30's leaving quite a choice of military & commercial patterns.
Not a bad summary of US types from 'Tanks':
Unarmored Half-Tracks
