I have an ash tray the was made from a shell (inherited from my Uncle). I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about this item. It measures just under 4" in diameter and 4" tall. has 3 holders for your smokes and a push rod that dumps your ashes into the bottom section. The inscriptions read as follows: Casablanca Co,C of the 62nd Signal Battalion North Africa 1943 Cazerene Pass Oran Tunis Algier Bizerte On the bottom it says: 3-IN-MK-II M2 Lot-22-23147-2 N.S. 1942 Thanks
I have two ashtrays made from the same shells but in a different style, 4 slots for your smokes like your standard tray style , but has a center post in the middle of the tray that comes up and holds a 4 in ring with a miniture "buzz bomb" hanging in the ring. markings are 3-IN-MK-roman number 2 M2 lot - 22 - 23147 - 32 N.S. 1942
Dime a dozen. Later 105mm shells were used. All fancied up might be a bit unusual but anybody in a combat zone had no trouble getting their hands on used arty rounds. HP
They seem to be British shells. The ashtrays were apparently made by Amercian soldiers. The shells seems to be 75er or 105er shells and made in 1942 . this is the insignia used by the 62nd in 1942
