"Today is “Armed Forces Day” in this country. It is a time for all Americans to stop and remember the heroic measures taken by ordinary men and women in defense of freedom. And Herb Ruff is indeed a hero.
Ruff, a longtime resident of Herkimer, climbed aboard the U.S.S. Hobson on Dec. 23, 1942, down in Norfolk, Va., and embarked on a tour of duty that would take him from Nova Scotia to Casablanca, through England, Norway, across the Arctic Circle, to Iceland, Italy and France before finally heading to Okinawa, where he fought what is known as “The Last Battle of World War II,” between the United States Navy and the Japanese Kamikaze.
Ruff, who held the rank of Radioman, Second Class, carried out his duties which included: Sending and receiving coded and plain text messages, deciphering all coded messages, operating radar equipment and maintenance of all radio equipment. The U.S.S. Hobson was a destroyer assigned the task of protecting the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Ranger from German U-boats and pick up pilots who ditched into the ocean. “There were times when the planes crashed into the ocean and we were unable to rescue the pilots due to the rough waters,” said Ruff, “That was one of the most difficult parts of our duty.”
