Much has been said about the pro's and cons of the RAF Bomber Command assault on Germany. I would be interested in finding some authoratative sources on actually how many men and how much material was devoted to the defense of the Fatherland. Some points to get the "grey matter" working: a) Number of Fighter Squadrons, No of Aircraft , No of Squadron Members. b) Details of Supply and Support units required to support above. c) Same details for A.A. units d) No of actual A.A. guns and Ammunition expenditure rates. e) Industrial Infrastructure to provide for a thru e f) Units setup to handle RAF, RAAF, RCAF POW's. Crash site clear ups, search for evaders and escapers. g) Effect on German war production due to factory damage h) Clean up units deployed to clear damaged areas. i) Please feel free to add other details Assuming that the Bomber Command Offensive did not exist, where could these resources have been applied. The Russian front probably? As well as comments from the board I would be most appreciative of references to any published studies on this subject. I would like to steer clear of the moral aspects of the question, I believe that this has already been covered in other postings. Regards Robin Riley 156 Squadron RAF - 8 Group Pathfinder Force
As a starting point, at least for your first questions, I would check out the following site. It lists the various groups and the squadrons in each one. Each has links that give even further detail. It might be a good place to begin. RAF Bomber Command: Facts, Discussion Forum, and Encyclopedia Article
Not really an answer to your questions, but Albert Speer is supposed to have stated that 2 million germans were wholly occupied with with making AA guns and ammo, or shooting the stuff into the air. John.
Yes, an excellent starting point. Thanks for that. Robin Riley 156 Squadron RAF - 8 Group Pathfinder Force
Interesting topic. I look forward to the info this will gather. I too might suggest other Allied studies such as: United States Strategic Bombing Survey: Summary Report (European War) September 30, 1945 World War II Resources http://www.ibiblio.org/pha/ The Historic Government Publications from World War II http://digitalcollections.smu.edu/all/cul/hgp/ http://www.germanforces.com/ (Fairly new site - FYI: it gets massive updates almost daily.
