Which Rogues deal with history and WW2 history in particular in an occupation? Write articles, run other history websites, work on books, teach, etc.? As of what I know, TA has mentioned that he's designed WW2 wargames and JCFIII seems to be a researcher.
Does teaching history (European) and World Geography count? I did that for 34 years before I retired in 2003. I also took an MA in History a long time ago. My area of concentration was 18th and 19th Century England.
I run a battlefield archaeology section and also a UK PoW camp section on Online-Archaeology. I'm always researching Pow camps in Scotland with a view to compiling the definitive list. Needless to say, I'll be considerably older when/if that ever happens! I spend a lot of time visiting WW2 sites in Scotland and either updating the info on the National Monuments Record, or asking for a site to be added.
I run the GPRA website, which attracts a lot of enquiries about the Regiment. Most I can answer, the rest I pass on to those with greater knowledge. I have written two WWII books and several articles. Steve W.
I write, translate for other writers, do research , act as an interpretor, organize ceremonies and give conferences.
I taught history for a little while... now I can only mention my thesis for philosophy, which is a comparisson of the Nazi and Stalinist dicatorships... Does that count?
It certainly does Friedrich. It's an interesting subject. Rather than the Political aspect, I particulary like the Architectural comparison which really emphasize the Megalomania of both Dictators.
Wow ... We certainly do have a Knowledgeable list of members. Good call on this thread Wolfy ... It's always good for members to know who to ask what, if you know what I mean.
I don't know if this really counts but, for the past 10 or so years, I have been contacted, did research for by dozens of newspaper and TV reporters, several Authors, about a dozen or so School Teachers at all levels, as well as a few School Principals and such-not including literally hundreds of Veterans and ordinary people wanting my help an info on things. I do not ask for payment-so it's not a business or a job-but I have been told by I don't know ho many people-that I should become a Teacher and teach history. I do have the College background for it but-I dont know if I could stand up to anyones expectations if I did become a teacher ;-)) I like to keep "in the know of things" asmuch as I can-such as learning about the Passing of the last Titanic survivor-just yesterday ;-(
Heh heh, I wonder if im too old to become a teacher? ;-)) I could use about $30-to-$50 grand a year salary ;-))
I should start teacher training in 2010 which should be interesting. Did some work for a website once and I have written a couple of stories. Not much else though.
I briefly worked for Veterans Affairs Canada, where as a side part of my job I distributed historical WWI and WWII information to schools for Remembrance Day, did a military presentation/display at a teacher's symposium, and created a permanent militaria display in the office which was coordinated with the local legion's own artifact museum. Non-paid, I've been president of the local genealogy society branch, as well as he Heritage Festival of Saskatoon. I've written articles on Canada's military history and set up displays using some of the militaria I inherited from my parents as well as other information and resources.
Poke i laughed again. Like watching home movies from years ago. But seriously- MrH shines. See how young he looks in post #4.
As a Brit, I've always been amused at the American use of the word:"Druthers" (is that how you spell it ?) when describing what one would rather have done. If, at the age of 92,I could live my life again, I would certainly include a job where I could have used and commented on the history of ww2 that was to have been such a pivotal point in my life. Having said that,I realise that I have still managed to write (on the internet) such an awful load of stuff that I shouldn't really complain, but it would have been nice to have been paid for it ! Ron
Ron, I beg to differ. i never see that well conceived logo of yours that I always anticipate a good read about your very full and interesting life be it about your war experiences or your views on life. I ,too, wish you had written a book and made a bundle of quid off of it. Maybe bought yourself a fully restored Mark11 Jag in BRG of course and perhaps a cottage in Cornwall.. you are one of the key reasons I like this forum. As one born raised and educated in the US I have no clue to the origins of "druthers" but it was common useage in my childhood in central Alabama. Have not heard it in years. Then again Alabama is not the literary center of the US. It is, however; a bastion of the remnants of Middle English words, all the Appalachian states are and we are the southern end. I am a devoted Anglophile and wish we had meet on one of my trips to the UK. Your comments keep us honest here (; Cheers, Gaines
Gaines As the Japanese stamp collector used to say "Philately will get you anywhere !" Having said that and being strictly human, I'm always pleased to know that my offerings are sometimes of interest. If you are at all in the mood, send me your e-mail address, via a Private Message and I will send you in return a a text copy of the only novel I have ever written, based very loosely on my wartime axperiences in the Armored Corps. To date I have sold two copies and it is no coincidence that I have two daughters ! Best regards Ron
