I would like to know the number of islands that Japan captured and turned into military bases or supply depots. I can't find any information on it and need some help.

    Well here are some:

    Tarawa
    French Indochina
    Saipan
    Saigon
    Okinawa
    Iwo Jima
    Peleliu (spelling?)

These are just some that I can think of off the top of my head in less than a minute. So these are DEFINITELY not all of them.

I actually meant for the entire ocean. I figured the number would be in the 100s or 1000s. Is there any records available?

They went West too, to the Andaman Islands, and the Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean. They even threatened Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Madagascar.

Don't forget Hainan Island which held a huge complex of Japanese military, air, and naval bases.

And then there were large numbers of Japanese island bases like Rabaul and Truk which the Allies simply by-passed and never assaulted......

    OP,

"There are over 1,000 islands with names in the Philippine archipelago."

....and about 11,000 in the Indonesian Archipelago.
