What happened at Rothbach in November '44?

I am trying to establish the circumstances in which Theodor Schmidt who was with the 3rd Kompanie Sturm-Bataillon A.O.K.1 went missing in action in or near Rothbach on 28.11.44. He was reported killed on 5.12.44 via an American death list on 21.1.45 and is buried at Hochfelden Cemetery.
There is such a proliferation of abbreviations within the German Army that my efforts, so far, to discover what happened have only left me confused.
I would be very grateful if anyone could shed some light for me.
