When divers stumbled across the bomb and alerted the coastguard, the clock was ticking for Lionel. Navy divers who inspected the bomb tried to coax the critter out, but Lionel was unwilling to move and delivered a nasty nip to one diver's finger. The Royal Navy bomb disposal unit had no choice but to leave the lobster where he was and set charges to the mine. They set up a cordon 1,000m around the bomb and blew it up. The explosion sent a plume of water 50ft into the air and shook Swanage - the coastguard said it received three 999 calls.
