"The question has been raised as to whether or not Josef Mengele, who escaped punishment for his Nazi war crimes, had anything to do with the phenomenal number of twins born to this small Brazilian town.

This idea came to light because of Mengele: The Angel of Death in South America, a book by Argentine historian Jorge Camarasa. In it he postulated that Mengele, who was known for his experiments on twins during World WarII, had continue his work in South America after World War II.

According to the New York Post, Mengele was obsessed with the causes of twin births. His “work” in concentration camps like Auschwitz allowed him to experiment without restraint on human subjects. Mengele left Germany in 1945 just before the Allied Invasion swept the country. He left armed with a medical bag of lab notes among other things."

At least during WW2 Mengele could not himself create twins, they were taken from among the people transferred by trains to camps. And I think there is no proof he continued his experiments post-ww2?

Mengele escaped europe through Skorzeny's 'Odessa' organisation to Argentina like Priebke,Rudel and Eichman and many many others did . He settled in the barrio german of Bariloche as most new german immigrants did and restarted his live as a 'medico'' .
Recently there was written a book about the Bariloche colonia by an Argentinian journalist called "Bariloche Nazi-Guía Turística", where the author Basti even states Bariloche housed Hitler himself after the war .
Google it and you will find quiet a lot of hits about the book.
(Do keep in mind that the Berlin found ' skull remains'' of Hitler are proven to be of a female , so it wouldn't surprise me if the guy proves to be right later on in what hes trying to explain in the book )

Anyway ..After the capture of Eichmann Mengele fled Argentina and ran to Paraguay and married an Uruguyan wife .He finally died in Bertioga Brasil after drowning on the 7th of Februay 1979. He used the alias Wolfgang Gerhard .In 1992 through DNA his identity was really confirmed .
He remained being a doctor all his life (argentine police records exist about him running a illegal abortion clinic in the early 50ies .

There still plenty of 'those ''Colonia's' left today , all the way from Patagonia up to Mexico , but very little about this whole 'Colonia' subject is ever well documented . Odessa makes a very interesting piece of modern history.. interesting enough to raise serious questions about the official readings why WW2 really ended .

I added a little map showing some of those settlements for those interested :) enjoy ;)
