What are your favorite ships of WWII? Everyone has their own personal favorite, so post it here. Make sure you include the ship name and/or class, the nation, and the reason why you like it. My personal favorite is the USS Enterprise, since it survived the entire Pacific war before being scrspped in the 1950's. At another point, the Enterprise was the only carrier in the Pacific. My second favorite is the USS Missouri since I see it every day when I go to school.
it amazes me! when members take the time to put together a poll thread, that the numbers of views should produce better figures in voting,if you take the time to look! could you possibly spend a few seconds to vote! surely not asking too much?...
I chose destroyers. They simply did everything. Whether it was ferrying mail, providing AA/ASW screen to battleships and carriers, or cruise as a formation and engaging the enemy as the battle line, to supplying troops on shore.
What if we don't have a favorite? Or don't have one on the list? Especially without a time frame. Or nationality. or ....
my favorite is the uss massachussetts because my wifes grandpa served on her towards the end of wwii.
I wouldn't say no interest. I like naval vessels but don't favor one class by any means. Especially when vessels within a class can vary so much. Destroyers are perhaps the most extreme example but it's also a long way from Langley to even a Midway much less Ronald Reagun or perhaps even more extreme Turtle or Hunly to Virginnia
I understand your interests dont match the category choices lwd,but not all options that one wants will appear when a poll is started, its a case of selecting one if you find it suits..ray..
I'm going with destroyers. I've had a fascination with them since I read The Cruel Sea many years ago. My estimation of them and DDE's grew even more after reading The Last Stand of the tin Can Sailors. I agree with Mikebatzel's reasoning.
The Poll question is a bit different than the thread title indicates. While posters have mentioned their personal favorite individual ship, the question indicates type of ship, which I took to mean all classes from all navies, and the type of workload they took on. Just my opinion on the question. As Erich has picked something not on the list, perhaps a moderator could jump in and add an option for "other"
I like the Courageous class carriers, well I like their looks. This is a favourate thread, so what if my favourates are crap?
The USS Gatling (DD-671) a Fletcher Class destroyer. Why? Versatile, good service life, handsome & the fact that my Father served on the Gatling post-war. John Steinbeck wrote something to the effect the he found the Destroyers to be the most attractive of warships; the "grayhounds of the sea".
f6f, Great thread I am attaching a thread I started a while ago about a veteran I met aboard the USS Enterprise... it was an amazing experience, and I will never forget it. http://www.ww2f.com/wwii-today/35958-4our-generations.html Agreeing with Mike and Lou, designed for their protection to battlefleets, and multifaceted function... Destroyers, especially the US Navy classes.... they were the best destroyers of their time. Some may argue, and that's fine. But considering their balance of firepower, stability and speed... my money is on the USS Fletcher all the best, Jem
I take a liking to battleships. Although they were quite outdated when the importance of carriers were realized, they still carry the sense of a "floating fortress" of a bygone age. I once toured the USS Missouri and all I could think of was that this fit the definition of amassed sheer firepower.
