Howdy fellow Rogues.

Jus wondering if we have a definative list of the NAMES of every Japanese Detroyer, Destroyer escort, corvette etc...anything manufactured for the IJN with a name attached...

My intention is to take this said list to a translator that speaks Japanese, and give you a complete listing of IJN shipping pronunciations, and their meanings in Japanese.

I have an article from my old files which I wish to add to, with the intention of posting it here as a permanent reference for all those not wishing to butcher the language, and for the curious who wish to know the meanings behind some of the very picturesque names the IJN bestowed on their vessels.

I thank anyone in advance. I will be posting a list of capital ship pronunciations and meanings v soon, but for now, I'm just going to expand the entries to the listing I already possess.

Regards

This list isn't comprehensive, but damn near.

V nice and thanks to all....somebody has already done this, just not given the Japanese phonetic pronunciation of the names, which I mught stll do.

The list is actually worth more than a glance, if only to remind one-self that Japanese culture permiates these names, and are often specifically beautiful in concept, as a lot of art is from this section of the globe.

Such a pity we had to fight these guys. They are a very civilized community, (with apologies to victims of their barbarism concerning prisoners, and other well nkown atrocities committed by their military services.)

Maybe it was a pity VB, but no-one had any choice in the matter. They decided to impose their will on the peoples of Asia and no-one had any choice in the matter. They may be civilised but I havent heard any acts of contrition in relation to their activities between 1937 and 1945. And their silence is deafening. They got what they deserved.

sorry, but that statement is just wrong VB and here's why: Japanese war crimes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fighting them was absolutely the right thing to do - and showing them the error of their ways

....

Over on J-aircrafts (where the IJN board is) there was at least a start to having actual recordings of Japanese pronouncing some of the words of interest. This would include a fair number of ship names. I haven't checked to see what the status of it is. There have also been some very interesting discussions of translating and interpreting Japanese over there.

Huh? You made me do a double take on that one. I don't know if "pity" is the word I would have used.
