Because of its strategic position for the attack and protection of convoys supplying the North Africa campaigns, Malta faced persistent bombing raids from June 1940 onwards, increasing in intensity into 1942, with a climax in April. The resulting thousands of unexploded bombs had to be dealt with by a mere handful of bomb disposal men. This story unfolded as I researched original BD records from 1940-44 - for more info see Bomb Disposal Malta World War 2.
