Thought I might as well go ahead and create this thread. All discussion for the World Cup should take place here, instead of crowding out the Sports section.

Thoughts/Comments/Reactions to what is going on in the World Cup all welcome here.

The dutch are certainly a powerhouse this year. I certainly favor them to come out ahead in their group.

I am still not sold on Argentina. Of all the teams, they and Portugal only just managed to squeeze into the WC this year. I don't expect them to get any further then the second round at best.

I still see Spain as the favorites. Too much depth, too much skill, a team that is certainly playing well together and on the same page.

    Top 10 World Cup controversies

And according to this the Number 1 of all Time.
    England's winning goal in 1966

With the World Cup final tied 2-2, England and West Germany went to extra time. Eleven minutes into the extra period, England's Geoff Hurst put a shot on net. The ball hit the underside of the cross bar, bounced down, and then was cleared out. The referee did not know if the ball had completely crossed the line. He looked to his linesman, a Soviet named Tofik Bakhramov, who indicated it was a goal. Bakhramov later said he thought the ball had bounced back off the net, not the crossbar, so he did not bother to observe whether the ball bounced over the goal line or not. To add more controversy to the tale, Bakhramov, according to lore, was asked on his death bed how he knew the ball crossed the line. He replied, “Stalingrad,” where over 75,000 Soviets died fighting against the Nazis.

Do you think, perhaps, you can keep things on topic? Your post is not relevant to the discussion of this years World Cup.

It's Called "The World Cup Thread" Therefore anything to do with the World Cup of Football AKA Soccer.
So Controversial calls are not part of this years World Cup. Since It has been part of Every other world
cups ever Played, we'll just have to Wait and see.

According To your Picks, South Africa out in the First Round, LOL. I'm sure provisions have been made to prevent That. ;)

Its called the World Cup thread to discuss this years event. Its also MY thread, that I created. If you want to talk about controversial WC moments, feel free to start your own thread. Like the OP of this thread, its to talk about the CURRENT WC set to start in a week. There have been plenty of 'Facts' and 'Top 10 ________" WC tidbits in the news, I don't want them to be rehashed here.

    Back on topic...

South Africa is a pretty bad team. Much like Swizterland/Austria in the last WC they are only part of it due to being the Host Nation. Even the South Africans don't expect them to do anything. The ref from that South Korea/Italy game (the fixed game) was a very corrupt Ref (and I don't think he is a ref anymore). But soccer has been known to be a rather corrupt sport - even so, you still need to be half decent to turn the calls in your favor into actual goals.

As Promised, by final predictions now that the first kickoff is only hours away and all the 'injuries' have been taken into account.

    A:
    France, Mexico
    B: Argentina, Nigeria
    C: England, United States
    D: Germany, Serbia
    E: Netherlands, Cameroon
    F: Italy, Paraguay
    G: Brazil, Portugal
    H: Spain, Honduras

Really only one change - Group of Death G - as the Drogba arm break is a serious injury for Ivory Coast.

Just a few hours until Mexico vs South Africa. Hopefully its a good, safe tournament!

I think it'll be 2 - 1 in favor of mexico. Don't underestimate SA opening the tournament in front of so many. Mexico isn't a strong team - has been on decline for a while as the US has risen in standard.

Some weeks ago I put my own predictions together and they are as follows:

However, since then I have decided that Uruguay will qualify over France in group A. France will not get over the Domenech factor. Also Serbia will qualify over Australia in group D. I also think Portugal might miss out in favour of Ivory Coast.

The First match ended in a 1-1 draw. S Africa had a couple chances with less than two minutes remaining but was unable to convert.

Looks like Sniper was way off the mark with his prediction.

I was close with my 2 - 1 prediction, certainly could have ended up that way.

    I favor France 1 - 0 Uruguay next.
