Does anyone have or know of any photographs of the damage sustained by the USS South Dakota during the Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, on the night of 14-15 Nov 1942?

I've done a search and have been able to find construction, shakedown, etc, photos but none of her immediately after the battle, where she took a goodly number of large and medium caliber hits.

Were those shells from Kirishima or Hiei? Or both?

No kidding! One says "super" looking forward to starboard. I assume that "super" means superstructure?

Hiei was sunk the day before I believe. Damage was from Kirishima. There's a detailed damage report on the web. I can't seem to get to it right now though.

Here's a page that makes a case for it being an AP round along with a couple of pictures (niether seem to be the ones below):
    Kirishima's hit on South Dakota

For info on what happened to Kirishima see:

Here's a pretty good description of the battle:

Thanks for looking. I've seen the Kirishima Damage Analysys, very good read. I like the third link. Made a copy of it.

I was hoping to find some large shots showing the overal damage to the ship, something on par with the well known photos of the USS Aaron Ward at Okinawa, plus some closeups.

Would like to thank Mk4 for efforts on this one. Obvious smarty pants. ...Would also express admiration on how SD was able to pick up the discrepancy on that photo. Had you seen that picture before SD? A bomb , not a shell? ...That could be any ship anywhere for all I would have known. The pic is 60+ yrs old. And it's not like it is a well known pic from WW2.... From memory? Or maybe you searched and found something? Either way, impressed.
