I'm searching for anyone who served with or knew my grandfather. His name was John Theodore Swiridow. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th Air Force. I have very little info on him. He died before I was born and his family said he never talked about his time in the service. I know he enlisted/discharge from Blackland Air Force Base in Waco, TX. Dec. 4, 1942 - Oct. 9, 1945. Possibly aviation cadet. When He enlisted in Dec. 1942 to June 26, 1944, his service # 13169976. When he reenlisted in June 27, to Oct. 9, 1944, his service # 0929832. He was born June 2, 1922. Died March 24, 1967. I have sent for his papers ( thanks for the info) but yes I was told most were destroyed in 1973. His Obituary said he was Air Force Pilot in European, African, and Middle Eastern Theaters. Formerly employed by Sutherland Lumber Co. in Burgettstown, Pa. and is interred in the Washington Cemetery. For now I'm afraid that's all I got. I hope that rings a bell for someone.
Howdy reebukk, We'd like to help, but we would need a lot more to go on than you have provided. Do you have access to any of this papers, pictures, etc?
Welcome aboard, Reebukk! As Slipdigit said, any extra info you can give about him (service number, units, etc) would help greatly. You can also get in touch with the VA and request a copy of his DD214 and other records....this may take some time, and may not be possible (a lot of records were lost in a warehouse fire back in....'73? '74? Somewhere thereabouts, anyway). Any kind of notes/letters/diaries/flight log, memorabilia (such as unit patch or belt buckle, etc) would help with tracking down some info. In the meantime, try these: Veterans' Service Records Miscellaneous Washington County, Pennsylvania Obituaries
Reebukk, Try the ArmyAirForces web sight. There are a lot of great people over there. They might be able to help.I was able to get all kinds of info on a 2nd cousin who was in the 15th AAF. Bob
I went on thier web site and was able to fill in a online request. Thanks so much. That was an awesome lead.
Welcome reebukk, Sounds like you're off to a good start. Have you tried contacting anyone at the nearest American Legion? Good Luck with your search.
Naw, just interested. Others have mentioned the A.L. before and I know from relatives and friends that many who returned spent a lot of time telling stories and drinking at the local American Legion Hall. A LOT of time
I was just looking at a paper from my grandfather's funeral arrangements. it says under local activities Vet 10 10 #2. Do you think maybe that's his VFW local number? If so how would i figure out where it's at?
Thanks for the link RabidAlien. Looks like it is Hopewell #8634. They don't have a web site but I was able to get a address and phone number. Thanks for helping again.
Hey guys long time since Ive been on. Ive been still searching for any info on my grandfather. The only bite I have is from the American Air Museum in Britain. He was part of the 447th Bomb Group. But I haven't seen anything of him on the web site. Still dead in the water, Reebukk
Welcome back reebukk! Was the request for his papers any help? How about fold3.com or some other online resource? This thread is the reason why I do not archive threads. Six and half years later and we can still continue research and hopefully add to the historical record.
