    I'm a long-time lurker - I decided I could lurk just as well with a username.

    I've been fascinated with WWII history since I was old enough to recognize uniform insigna. And I've always loved USN ships.

    My 89 y.o. father (who still farms) was in the Infantry on Luzon from Jan 45 to just past V-J. He talks about some of it - but there's things about the experience that bother him to this day.

    Myself, I had a 4 year stint in the USN as a Machinery Repairman first on USS Sierra AD-18 then on USS Vulcan AR-5. Good duty on both ships. My enlistment ended on 7/7/77. I should have stayed in.

    'Been farming ever since.

    It seems to be the norm for noob forum members to throw out a question in their very first post, and I do have a question that I am unable to find the answer to:

    A well-known photo of the USS Selfridge DD-357 shows the bow and forward 5 inch mounts destroyed by a Long Lance torpedo. The ship next to the Selfridge has to be a Dixie class AD, a Vulcan class AR, or a Fulton class AS. What ship is that?

    I enjoy this subject and this Site and I'm usually amazed by the detailed knowledge of some of the posters on here.

    Glad you decided to lurk no longer. I don't know of the picture you mention, but I'm sure one of the Rogues will know it and be able to answer your question. Nice to have have you around.

    Mate thats a sorry picture...how does one make headway in this condition?? I spose they could have "reversed" their way back...Wonder if this picture made it back to the states at the time...?

    Welcome aboard, Tender. Thank you for your service and please pass on our thanks to your father as well! :D We have a great respect and admiration for our vets here, especially those who served in WW2. If I am not being too nosy, may I ask what unit your father served with in the Philippines? I have a great uncle who was in the Lingayen landing on Luzon in Jan 1945.
