Well, I'm seeing trailers for Red Tails, and I'm already apprehensive. As usual, they allow the CGI artists to stupidly do what they want, and have aircraft doing things they couldn't really do, in formations they never really flew. I think they hired the same CGI bunch that worked on Pearl Harbor.
Quit complaining... Hey, it could be worse, they could have used the studio that worked on Otoko-tachi no Yamato.
LOL I'll see it....I may not like it, but I'll see it. I already am shuddering at the scene with the P-51's hanging with the ME262's. Wasn't there something like 100+mph disparity in top speeds between the two? That'd be like a B17 keeping up with a P-51 piloted by an overcaffeinated squirrel.
The Red Tails scored three of the eight Me-262 kills, so they were doing something right. But we'll find out how god a movie it is on January 20th.
the 332nd did shoot down a couple 262's - March 24, 1945 I believe but they also lost to the LW jets as well. Hopeful the guys will make it look somewhat real with all the hio-tech at their disposal
Yeah, I know they scored a couple of -262's, I just seem to recall a segment where the P-51 is chasing the ME-262 and staying on his tail pretty well. Not a deflection or head-on shot, as one would expect.
The commercial I saw I thought it was for a football game - The pep talk during the half time break. Sounds too 'cliche laden' to me. A P-51 doing a back flip - while shooting? Maybe a good Saturday afternoon matinee movie for the kids.
Rabid to put things in historical context the 332nd was given credit for 3 Me 262's the date I mentioned, if guys are interested do a little research on the engagement flown
arg just took a view of the trailer, someone please tell me they are not going to protray the 109's and 262's in those bogus colorations. 109's - all yellow noses with a bomber insignia Totenkopf on the nose. C'mon ............... and yes Rabid noted the Stang on the tail of the 262 going through the bomber formation that is just plain wrong as this was stictly a huge no-no for obvious reasons. too much A/C clutter from both sides in to minimal an area of sky. it appears this will be another movie non historical to provide the audience with entertainment only
Wait for the 262 to approach landing. It's speed/altitude is low and can't accelerate . Isn't that how 262's were shot down?
Typically, unless some waist/tail gunner got extremely lucky, the 'Stangs would just loiter around above the 262's airfield and catch them on return. The 262 had a very low air-time due to massive fuel consumption rate of their jet engines, so couldn't stay in the fight very long. So some fighters would stick around the Fortresses, while others would go wolfpack and wait for the sheep to come home.
Be like a B-17 keeping up with a Lancaster!...on two engines....no one. Yeah bit more than 100 difference...but the Me262 wasnt wound up all the time...burns fuel you know! And put her in a dive and you've got 500mph easy for a P-51...oops, how do you slow these things down! The sticks not...moving...
I watched the interview with George Lucas on The Daily Show last night and even he didn't seem to take his own movie seriously. Admitted it was more of a feel-good movie for teenagers and jokingly said the next episodes would be better. ??? because of the situation of Allied escorts ~ Mustangs they would fly roughly a 1000' above the bombers so could easily spot the jet contrails and watch as the jets just like prop driven fighters fly through the bomber stream. The Lw pilots could only zoom up or head off to the right or let or head for the deck, and due to superiority in allied numbers it could alamost be rest assured that some Mustangs were going to latch on to the jets and try and follow them in a tight turn which the jet was not able to perform, cutting the jet short and hitting it with .50's. Really only later in the war when the jet bases associated with the defense of Berlin could be tackled and true some jets were cauaght on the landing approach. In November 1944 Kommando Nowotny the predessesor of the famous JG7 had bases quite forward to the west and north so P-47 and Mustang units could engage them along with JG 54's puny efforts tot keep escorts at bay with their Fw 190D-9's. it was hoped in the air to air combats that US/British fighters could hit and destroy one engine and thus perform the coup de grace on the 262 or Ar 234 as it slowed down and became non-manueverable.
The historical accuracy of the film certainly doesn't seem hopeful to me, but judging from the crap coming from Hollywood recently, I'm hopeful it will be at least entertaining.
Mustangs vs. ME 262's? I guess I have got to go! I saw George Lucas on the Jon Stewart show and he was saying that he kept some Muskogee Airmen as advisors throughout the movie-so I am hopefull. JeffinMNUSA
Aw, heck...slowing down's the easy part! Walking away after the sudden stop is where it gets difficult. Yeaaaaaaaaaaah....and Tony Scott had Naval personnel as "advisors" when he hacked out "Crimson Tried". I mean "Crimson Tide". I was on subs when that came out, and it was easy to tell who was a Navy guy in the theater...we laughed through the whole movie. A civilian friend later asked me what was wrong with the movie, I told her we'd have to rent it so I could pause it and explain what was wrong with each scene. It took us about 4 and a half hours to get to the end of the movie. Not due to long explanations (or canoodling...unfortunately), but due to the QUANTITY of pause-n-explains.
