A sudden spurt of American history recently. "A silver gallantry medal from the Battle of Bunker Hill, awarded by King George III, may see bids in excess of $70,000 on June 9 in Heritage Auctions' Civil War & Militaria sale. The lot was presented to Captain Peter Ewing of the Royal Marines for his efforts during the American revolutionary war battle, in which he lost an arm. Ewing led the Grenadier Company into battle in 1775, at just 21 years old. The medal is inscribed with the message: "By order of the King with 300 pound for the Wound Capt Ewing Recvd the 17 of June 1775", and is engraved with the royal script cipher "GR" below a Hanoverian crown. It has been called "the most important American revolutionary war artefact we've ever had the pleasure to catalog" by Heritage Auctions, prompting an estimate of $70,000+."
