Came across a box the other day that had my father's mementos from his time in Assam. I had a general idea that it was stuff from his time in the Army, but I never really looked at all of the things. It is amazing! He has mess passes, movie passes, Christmas Dinner Menus (for '44 and '45), a bill from dinner at a local restaurant, railway passes, a copy of his notice to report to the Rest Camp for two weeks, even his berth assignment on the USS Hawaiian Shipper, the boat that took him back to the states in January, 1946. Not too many photos, but there are two diaries. There is another thread here called about "my grandfather's diary." Several of the incidents are in my father's diary, too. He was a T/5 in the 236th Signal Service Battalion, A.P.O. 629. I know that APO 629 was for all of the commands at Chabua, but the internet comes up very short on info about the 236th! If I can get my scanner to cooperate, I'll post some of the items.
Welcome ! You found the best site to share this with. I hope you can share some photos. This forum has many experts here to help you.
Welcome to the Forum, Rick. I also hope you will share more about your grandfather's service. I think you'll find that putting the info you do have on a Forum like this tends to draw folks who are also looking. It does require a bit of patience and perseverance, though.
Sounds like you hit the jackpot. By all means, post what you have. People around here love to see and discuss these kinds of items. I hope you get your scanner working soon. BTW, welcome to the forum. You'll find others who share your interests.
I was doing research myself on the 236th Signal Service Battalion and came across this thread. My grandfather was a T/3 in the 236th and have found very little information and/or pictures so I'm also very interested in this treasure trove you've found! Thank you in advance for anything you can share!
How cool. Dad was stationed at Chabua as a C-46 pilot from the fall of '44 to the spring of '45. I have some snapshots of him with airplanes and at the rest camp. I also have some official photos of the facilities if you are interested.
