Serving as telegraphist on board this vessel at the time of the suppose " attack" on September 6th 1945, I have no recollection of any such "attack" taking place. My ship action station was down in the 6" gun transmitting station and I have no recollection of being closed up at action stations at that time. Surely, Admiralty records can verify this to, my mind, erroneous record. Livebait24
A quick check on Wikipedia states that such an attack did take place by Japanese aircraft. How serious an attack it was is anyone's guess and it may have started and ended before any order to action stations to be given.
Umm, belasar, you missed the "citation needed" part? http://www.hmsgangestoterror.org/Bda/Berm45.htm http://www.naval-history.net/xGM-Chrono-06CL-Bermuda.htm Both fail to mention any attack. If the indeed had been one, I would certainly think that one of those two websites would have some mention of it. EDIT: I believe this "attack" was mentioned, some years ago, over on AHF. IIRC, it was never corroborated outside of Wiki.
I'm with the op....A telegraphist is an honourable profession...Even the Jack Tar version...And in the best position to know if any action report is signaled back to the admiralty. That should lay that myth surely...Man on the spot trumps wiki....
Oh and welcome to the forums Liveball...You'll find a few of us telegraphists about on this and our sister site at ww2 talk.
