My grand uncle was a lieutenant on that ship. I wanted to know if anyone knows anything about the Mt Hood explosion that's not already on the web? Thanks Rob
If there is a particular aspect about the incident for which you are seeking information, it may help to be more specific with your question. (Thread moved)
If you'll tell us what you already know it will save duplication of effort. I'll echo Tommy in that it would help if your questions were more specific.
On the 'net, but buried. The JAG Manual Investigation on the Mount Hood explosion: http://www.jag.navy.mil/library/investigations/MT%20HOOD%20EXPLOSION%2010%20NOV%2044.pdf One Lieutenant is listed as a survivor: Lester H. Wallace, Lieut. C-V(S) USNR Three Lieutenants are listed as killed: V. J. Orr, USNR W. T. Chapell, USNR C. T. Bair, USN Just in case your granduncle was a Lieutenant jg, there were 4: S. Sabol, USN M. M. Miller R. A. Hanlon, USNR J. B. Mackenzie Just curious as to which one was you granduncle.
Came across their site many moons ago when I was reading up on the USS Iowa turret explosion. Lots of good reading. The entire online list can be found here: http://www.jag.navy.mil/library/jagman_investigations.htm
Guys, thanks for clearing this up for me. My grand uncle was Lt jg Trevor Henry Fox, he was a career navy man enlisting before the war and was 46 when he died. Had always heard the stories from my dad and my grand mother about his naval exploits and that he was killed in the Mt Hood explosion, but I realized after reading up on the history of the explosion of the Hood that since he is buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery that he couldn't have been on the Hood, but must have been on one of the nearby ships. As it turns out he was attached to the USS Mindanao, but this also shows a mistake on his gravestone (see the link) which says he died on 10 NOV, the day of the explosion, but according to the JAG link he died in the hospital on 12 NOV.
