I have to say, "Unless Victory Comes: Combat With a Machine Gunner in Patton's Third Army" is one of THE best firsthand accounts of war I've ever read. Gene Garrison, a draftee assigned to the 87th Infantry Division, does an amazing job chronicling what he and his buddies experienced during the drive to Germany. His account of the fighting in the Bulge and Hurtgen was bone-chilling. The fear was palpable when he told of sitting in his foxhole and seeing flashlight beams scything through the darkness, SS infiltrators silently creeping into the 87th's position. Garrison talks about the heady days rushing into Germany, penetrating the Siegfried Line and pushing onward. Anybody looking for an account of the fighting in Europe should definitely pick this one up.
