What do you think are the coolest WWII unit patches? Personally, I'm a big fan of the 5th Army and 2nd Marines. (try to provide examples)
I've always been fond of the 5th Army patch, since my father wore it, along with the 473rd Infantry Regiment ribbon.(see my avatar) The ribbon was theater made and not approved by the war department. So far I have been unsuccessful in locating the ribbon or the cap badge. The other patch I like is that of the 1st Marines.
That's the insignia of the First Marine Division not the First Marines; the "First Marines" would be a regiment in the First marine Division.
Here are my two favorites: The division of my home state: And this one, for obvious reasons for those who know me..
Not a unit but a division patch. I quite like this one for obvious reasons My father was in the British 78th Division, otherwise known as the Battleaxe Division.
I like the Tomahawk of the XIX Corps. Through most of the war, Old Hickory (30th Infantry) and Hell on Wheels (2nd Armored) was the heart of the XIX Corps.
It's not just you Lou. The OP got it wrong too. Correcting it is a Marine thing. Should be 2d Marine Division, 2d Marines is a regiment in that division. 1st Marines patch. (1st Marine Regiment) During WWII, and most of it's history, the 1st Marine Division has been composed of 1st, 5th, 7th and 11th Marines (regiments) 2d Marines patch. (2d Marine Regiment) During most of it's history, the 2d Marine Division has been composed of 2d, 6th, 8th and 10th Marines (regiments) I agree with you Lou, the 1st Division patch, the "Blue Diamond" is my favorite also. ....and for Brad, the "Blue Diamond" taken to the extreme and because his unit was..... 1st Battalion, First Marines or in Marine parlance 1/1.
My avatar, see left, shows the Battle axe of the 78 British Infantry Div and the black cat of the 56th Div. Ron
