i couldn't find a thread about it. i'm reminded of a british animated movie ("Valiant") that mentioned at the end that animals received awards or mentions for wartime service. these included horses, dogs, carrier pigeons, i think even a cat.
This site mentions the British made a memorial for WW1 worms http://www.slate.fr/story/79927/animaux-heros-guerres-mondiales More dogs : This French WW1 one saved several lives and Sgt Stubby who captured a German spy!
WWI rather than WWII, but in Brussels Belgium there is a large statue/monument to "the pigeon soldiers", honoring the carrier pigeons.
KodiakBear has a good read in his book " A Kodiak Bear Mauling " regarding the service a bear provided. One smart cookie. The bear I mean...Maybe KB could put a bit down here.
Not WWII (Korea) but an interesting story on a little known horse that served with 5th Marines. Her name was Sgt. Reckless. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergeant_Reckless
