    Salutations,

Could someone identify this speech from Hitler? It appeared in the French documentary "Apocalypse : La Deuxième Guerre mondiale" and I've been wanting to hear the complete speech ever since.

As the title says, it's about the [pseudo] conquest of Stalingrad, and this is how the documentary translates what he says :

    "We have taken Stalingrad
There are only a few resistance pockets left
We will take them one after another
    It's a matter of time"

Was it given on the anniversary of the Munich Putsch, at the Burgerbraukeller where the revolt was begun in 1923?

Hitler used to speak annually there in front of an audience of Partei Old Guard and beery breath Storm Troopers.

This speech, I think, began with Hitler stating that his troops had been lead to a certain point, on a certain river, where they are occupying "A city that bears the name of Stalin himself." Warming to his topic, he gave a frief description, before exclaiming, "...and you know we have done it. There are a few minor areas to clean up, but we really have done it."

I believe this speech was given at the hieght of the last 6th Army offensive, Operation HUBERTUS, that began quite promisingly for the Germans, and had yeremenko with his back to the river, and his troops positioned in pockets all with their rear at the water, The 6th Army shot it's bolt with Hubertus. 90% of the city was captured, but the troops were so ragged, and fought out exhausted, that with full winter only days wawy, everyone realised from Paulus down that the 6th was never going to clear the city, that it was just oo big a task for the resources and people involved to sustain. Early victories in this last gasp offensive had seen the Germans capture posiyions like the Lazur chemical works, and the greater part of the Dzerhizinsky Tractor Factory. But there were always more Russians, more positions to fight, and the snipers were particularly demoralizing.

Hitlers speech was made whilst Paulus was still recieving optimistic reports from his 'frontschwein'. The war they were fighting was referred to as 'Rattenkreig', and Soviet opposition was everything from suicidal, to cunning, to fanatical. Several positions never did fall to the Germans, like Pavlov's House, or the Barrikady Works. Mamayev Kurgen, the moonscaped hill in the middle of the fighting changed hands so many times that it became an open mass grave.

No wonder German soldiers called this city 'Verdun on the Volga"; they moaned endlessly about Russian 'gangster methods'. The truth was that except for a few small specialist engineer units with flamethrowers and demolition charges as standard equipment, the German army was ill equipped and trained for this kind of fighting. The Soviet soldier, plodding opponent out in the countryside, ill equipped for firefights at 1.2 kilometers, found that across the street their weapons were as good as anyone's, and also discovered a great deal of peasant cunning in dealing with these Germans.

Yeremenko got his on the spot commander Chuikov, to launch attacks right into the teeth of German advances. Anything tokeep the Germans off balance.

And Hitler was knocked off balance as well. The text of the speech shows what a mezmerizing effect it was having, giving Hitler a definate case of 'tunnel vision'. It was such a cereral contest for him that he couldn't help boatsing publically when he thought the thing was won. Hence the tone and content of the speech.
