This weekend was the 54th annual Steam-Era show in Milton, Ontario. Steam-Era has typically focused on farm heritage (steam tractors, old tractors, etc) but this year the theme was "military vehicles". A few of us from Southern Ontario showed up. There were about 20 vehicles in total (plus some artillery) and we had a nice spot on the top of a hill overlooking the fairgrounds to set up on. I brought a Stalwart, Willys MB, Pinzgauer and Haflinger. I was planning on taking photos today (the last day) but left my camera at home. So you'll have to suffice with some crappy blackberry photos. Advancing on the fairgrounds as seen from my jeep. That's my Stalwart in front. 8 Rolls-Royce cylinders and 4 Go-Devil cylinders. Nice Sunday morning wake-up call for the locals! View from the commander's hatch of the Stalwart upon arrival. M135 deuce and a half on the left. A view of the grounds. 1960s French SUMB (pronounced "sum-bee") on the left. Looking the other way. Ford GPW and M135. The "CP". Munga utility vehicle on the left. M135 and GPW in the middle. USMC slantback humvee on the right. That's a Finnish assault boat to the bottom left. Slantback Humvee and two jeeps;
A heavily armed M38. M2 on the back, M1919 on the passenger side. Looking out from the "CP". That's the M38 towing a 1906 British 18pdr; M37; Ford FGT. You might recognize this better as the gun tractor for a 25pdr; My Pinzgauer; The Stalwart display. For any IPSC/USPSA/UKPSA members, yes, the pieces of cardboard stapled to the pickets are what you think they are. All I had handy.
M3 Scout Car and a M38A1; A Willys MB. I forgot to take a photo of mine, but I think you all know what mine looks like by now. A nice uncut MUTT; My only competition in the "amphibious vehicles" department -- a 1945 DUKW. Hopefully we can take this and the Stalwart for a "swim" in a Lake at some point in the future; Of course, what good is a artillery mover without some guns to go with it? Finnish 40mm Bofors to the front and a 25pdr to the rear; Finnish Bofors; The Munga -- an interesting vehicle designed for the Bundeswehr in the 1950s; My Haflinger and the MUTT. The Haflinger was the smallest vehicle there; Overall it was a great show and a very good way to spend a long weekend. I hope they'll welcome the MVs back next year.
Nice ones, Mr. GP. Is that humidity I see? 'Cause last time I was in the Toronto area, pretty much melted. We are semi arid. Good in the summer and even the winter. not so much.
You are correct. It was very humid for most of the weekend. Saturday/Sunday was about the hottest its been all summer here -- around 30 degrees with very high humidity. I think the weather forecasters said "feels like 37" or something like that.
This was actually the first military vehicle event I've been to. As I said, it was a good way to spend the weekend.
I can't help thinking of great oaks and little acorns here. This year; 20-odd vehicles. Ten years time; fields of 'em?..
Thanks. As I said I'm still PO'ed that I forgot my DSLR. Maybe next year I'll remember. Well, the Stalwart does leak a lot of oil.....
*BUMP* We'll be displaying military vehicles again in two weeks at the same venue. If any MV owners or enthusiasts in the area happen to come across this post, you're more than welcome to attend -- no advanced notice is necessary. I'll be the guy with the MB, Pinzgauer, Stalwart and Haflinger. And yes, I'll remember my DSLR this time!
Great stuff Allan!!! I really dig your rides! Specially the Haflinger and the Pinzgauer! So many childhood memories for me there...........
