There are a number of calendars of upcoming events commemorating 70 years since Operation Market Garden (aka Arnhem) on my blog here, from various sources… http://hewasahero.wordpress.com/
70 years ago this morning they were off....... I really don't think this is the time or thread to start yet another round of 'what iffery' ' who got it wrong' etc. A salute to the fighting men of all sides and especially to those who didn't come back. :S! :S! :S!
A headlong race into the unknown. There is quite a lot about it in my book "Cameos of War" in aid of BLESMA. £11 with post. Get in touch.... There is a photo of a bridge at Weert, blown up be the enemy, when it was taken I am underneath in a boat checking the damage. Lost our water wagon "Again" rook the wrong turning Holland The gates of hell.....We lost good lads. Too many of them ....
70 years ago today, we were at Petit brogel; preparing for the night assault crossing of the Escaut canal ..As soon as the folding boats arrived. Driven by Canadian supply lorry. The men had not seen action before and were not very keen on going into an battle zone. Lt Cawallader went forward to recce the canal and select the spot for our assault. That crossing was a bloody nightmare. One I shall never forget. on to the "Garden Roller man"
