"A PENSIONER has overcome a lifetime of grief after he tracked down the Nazi who killed his father in the Second World War and befriended him.
Peter Gibbings, 85, was just 11 when his father Archibald died along with 517 of his comrades when HMS Courageous was sunk by two Nazi torpedoes.

However, after decades of grief the grandfather has come to terms with the death of the war hero after finding the man who gave the order to fire.

Mr Gibbings tracked down Kapitanleutnant Otto Schuhart and after writing to him about his father's last moment the pair met and became friends.

He said: "This man caused death of my father and the head of our family.

"I felt he had some explaining to do. I thought meeting him might be a little awkward but in fact it was a very amicable meeting.

"We agreed that both my father and he had been doing their job. My father was serving his country and doing his job - and so was Otto Schuhart."
