    Hello Gentlemen,

I apologize for the lack of detail in the photo, but I was hoping that maybe the basic shape of the cap insignia may be enough to identify it. It's a photo of my dad probably taken while training at Fort Campbell with the 20th Armored prior to being sent overseas. Any help would be greatly appreciated : )

    Thanks!
    James

I wonder if it's just the crest for the 20th Armored? The shape is similar, but I can't make out the details. Maybe you should contact the 20th Armored Association. Their website is here http://www.20tharmoreddivision.net/

Looks more like a unit crest than the armored's triangle.

What was the specific unit he was with?

Can't help with the crest but notice how his hat is cocked over his left eye? Since the Armored guys wasn't given a special badge, like the CIB of the infantry, or the wings the AAF received, the armored guys always wore their hats cocked over their left eye for identification. An old tanker tool me this and thought this was BS until I looked at the many pictures in the armored histories--even the officers. Just a point of interest that I found interesting.

Great info! He did mention tank duty so that helps. I didn't know he was in the 65th until I saw his name in their roster on the 20th Armored website. I don't know if he was with a tank battalion then switched? He told me alot of war stories, but we never discussed his division details or anything like that so I'm trying to piece things together. He did mention a unit or division change in Europe though, but I don't remember those details. I do feel pretty confident he was with the 65th at war's end since his stories match theirs. Thanks again for all your help, it's much appreciated!

The DUI in the photo could be that of the unit with which he did his training before going overseas. It looks like a photo that might have been taken after he completed his training.

Makes sense and I'm hoping I'll come across an old photo online of someone wearing something shaped like that. What I wouldn't do for a clearer picture though.. ; )

    Thanks again!

That's a really great looking insignia. While it is roughly triangular in shape, the one on the soldier's cap is closer to an equilateral triangle (like the armor patches).

Yeah, that's true. I did some more searching, and I found some more insignia that it looks quite a bit like: http://thumbs2.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/m7FkRxJ89Gzgi-XKO69KUgg.jpg

Apparently it's DUI for an armored officer. I wish I could be of more help, but I'm really only familiar with modern day U.S. military insignia. Most stuff used before 1960-70 elludes me.

    Hey gentlemen,

I'm not sure if this would help, but I found out today after reading an old newspaper clipping regarding four local Washington DC men who were chosen for a four month lieutenancy program, that my dad, being one of them, was training at the Ft Knox tank school. This photo may have been taken there? He was later sent to Camp Campbell to serve in the 65th armored infantry battalion.
    Thanks again!
