    Hello everyone.

I am new here and I hope I have posted this in the right area!

First of all my grandfather, William Charles Russell (born 1914) was based in Burma for about, I think, 3-4 years. No-one in the family knows much and he never, ever talked about it, not to my mother anyway. The only thing he would mention, was the ferocity of the Gurkas he fought alongside with and that he was once on some kind of mission, where a few of them were surrounded and they only just managed to get away (not much use I know, but that's all I know). I know he was a sergeant, but I have no idea of what regiment he was in. I have searched military records on various sites, but can find no trace of him. I have attached 4 photos hoping that someone can spot any clues!

    Thanks in advance

Looks like Recce Regiment which fits in with the Black berets. Can you scan a close up of one of the badges in the first photo?

Have you requested his records from the MoD? That would be a place to start.

No I haven't. I was not sure where to request them. Would it be through a website? Would I need his service number as I don't have that?

I cannot seem to enlarge the picture as it blurs, but the badge looks kind of like an upside down fir cone shape with a sort of cross in it.

Also looks like the man on the far right, back row may be Indian or Asian. Was it a mixed Asian and British regiment or is there no such thing (apologies for my military naivety!)

I have since spoken to my aunt who was was about 5 when the war ended. She said he was originally in the British Expeditionary Force in France to start with and was taken off the beaches at Dunkirk. He then went to India and Burma , moving around quite a bit and was involved in a vicious battle with the Japanese on the borders of India where 85% of the soldiers both sides were killed, fortunately the British and Allies won the day, if the Japanese had broken through into India the war in the war in the far east/pacific would have lasted a lot longer. She can only remember him coming back weighing about 8 stone and weakened by bouts of malaria and supporting himself with sticks - poor Grandpa. I guess there are a lot of battles, but maybe this was a famous well known battle that somebody may know the name of? My aunt is not sure if he was in the Expeditionary Force in India/Burma or whether it was something different.
