Hello! Does anyone have information concerning these two ships, and the Naval Air Station in Aguana Guam? I understand the SS Comet was under the control of the US Army,I think it quite possible the SS Matsonia was as well.
Welll wiki lists several "SS Comets" see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Comet If you are talking about AP-166 there's this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Comet_(AP-166) or this one: http://www.historycentral.com/navy/ap/Comet.html Amazon has the cruise book at http://www.amazon.com/USS-Comet-WWII-Cruise-Book/dp/B002NBFYUA Here's a rather pricey book on her http://www.biblio.com/book/following-comets-tail-history-u-comet/d/654706871 She's also mentioned here http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ref/Awards/changes.html Here's a page on the Matsonia which mentions she was in Army service during the war: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Matsonia_(ID-1589) But again looking at wiki there were a couple of Matsonia's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Matsonia It's mentioned here http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/showthread.php?p=143170No and here http://www.32nd-division.org/history/ww2/32ww2-1.html As for the NAS there are quite a few links including: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Air_Station_Agana http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/facility/agana.htm http://www.airfields-freeman.com/HI/Airfields_W_Pacific.htm (photos and a map) http://books.google.com/books?id=ChyilRml0hcC&pg=PA393&lpg=PA393&dq=naval+air+station+guam+world+war&source=bl&ots=bLibA-yr5e&sig=8nR7WV5z088aBWJWSSqohTx8FM8&hl=en&sa=X&ei=fOpQVLeuKIylNr7TgfgD&ved=0CFsQ6AEwCQ#v=onepage&q=naval%20air%20station%20guam%20world%20war&f=false There's a photo and background information at: http://www.history.navy.mil/library/online/buildbaseswwii/bbwwiicontents.htm or if you prefer http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/Building_Bases/ Here's a pointer to more records http://www.archives.gov/research/guide-fed-records/groups/313.html
I'm pretty sure my Dad mentioned being aboard the Matsonia when it was used as an Army troop transport. I transcribed his World War II South Pacific service journal at www.frozenprose.com. I don't know if WordPress has a search feature, but you can skim the latter entries. Photos of many ships used in World War II are on Wikipedia. Good luck!
Here's a good photo of the NAS in Agana Guam in 1945. http://www.pacificwrecks.com/airfields/marianas/agana/1945/agana-guam.html#axzz3HgKyeoBl
