Thought this was interesting... http://news.discovery.com/history/us-history/aluminum-fragment-appears-to-belong-to-earharts-plane-141028.htm
Saw a similar link earlier today. It is a interesting tidbit, it is far from absolute proof unless they offer a bluprint of the patch matched against the item itself. Or if they find the bones and match with DNA or the Electra remains just offshore. Frankly it is far more likely they went down at sea.
The article does say they claimed to have matched the dimensions of the patch and the distance between the rivets. However, the article at least, doesn't show that evidence. They do show very grainy sonar images that are supposed to be the plane. I'm waiting for them to get a submarine down there to take pics of the "anomaly". If the photos clearly show an Electra, that will make an impression on me. Right now, I've still got this story in the "cold fusion" category of "scientific breakthroughs announced prematurely".
Color me skeptical. Check these old threads. http://www.ww2f.com/topic/40186-is-the-amelia-earhart-mystery-finally-about-to-be-solved/?hl=%2Bamelia+%2Bearhart http://www.ww2f.com/topic/38758-bones-found-on-island-might-be-amelia-earharts/?hl=%2Bamelia+%2Bearhart
I have actually been following this for quite sometime and I am pretty sure we can cross this mystery off the list.
