"Len Terry, the motor racing engineer and designer, who has died aged 90, was noted for his role in the international successes of Lotus in Formula 1 and Indycar.
Terry was involved in creating the winners of the 1965 F1 World Championship and Indianapolis 500, but his skills benefited many other MARQUES during a long career; as the designer of more than 30 cars, his clients included Gilbey, BRM, Eagle, Surtees, BMW and JW Automotive.
Born in Hackney on February 11 1924, Len Terry left school aged 14 to become an office boy at a London theatrical producer. Four years later he was publicity manager. In 1943, faced with what he saw as the unappealing prospect of working in the mines as a Bevin Boy, he volunteered for the RAF and trained as an instrument maker; his work included making aerial cameras."
