Hi, I'd like to understand, what kind of factors influenced the layout of the facilities in the US camps/bases. Were there general rules where to raise the facilities, they did usually follow a specific layout? Did the expected lifetime of the camp (semi-permanent, temporary) have a huge impact on the placement of tents?
I'm not sure of there being any specific details relating to how the basic layout of any particular air field, base or training area should or would be. I think mostly the topography determined where and to what extent a base would conform to the needs. Here is a link that explains (in lengthy detail) the choosing of various AAF bases of early WW2. http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/VI/index.html#contents And for the Navy http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/Building_Bases/
