It appears that some divisions were picked to process the returning GI's back to the states.
For instance, the 2nd Armored guys were transferred to, and processed by, units from either the 5th or 12th Armored Divisions for the trip back to the states. This is why so many separations show a completely different unit than the one they were assigned to throughout the war.

I wonder if there is some list of the divisions that were picked for this duty. I think the 118th Regiment of the 30 Infantry Division was one of these processing units for the infantry. Thanks for any insight.

I found the following in this book, page 172: http://www.history.army.mil/html/books/104/104-8/CMH_Pub_104-8.pdf

"As pointed out above, the War Department redeployment plan had set up four categories for units. On recommendation of the Theater Commander, the War Department designated certain units to be inactivated. Notice of inactivation automatically placed a unit in Category IV."

    Underline is mine.

Not having any luck with finding a document listing the units?

Thanks for the effort Steve--I came up completely empty- handed in my search for a list also. I know the point system didn't really work so well because there were so many exceptions and screw-ups. I have a copy of a letter (the original signed by 600 men over 85 points) that was sent to the Senate Military Affairs Committee, the United Press, Stars and Strips, and others, complaining how they have been made to guard prisoners of war in the Calas Staging area, France while low point men were being shipped home--this was dated 19 September 1945, a full month after VJ day and the Category II units had been cancelled.
