Overall best, most comprehensive, and scholarly respectable book on the North African Campaign from the German perspective (or overview of both German and Allied)? Preferably something that details the military engagements in precise detail.

    Thoughts?

    Hi
I am within 30 pages of the end of

An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa (1942-1943) (The Liberation Trilogy)
by Rick Atkinson and I am willing to recommend it highly. There are lots of maps and detail in the 500 page book.
I am about to buy the second in his series which is the battles in Italy.
You can get this book form amazon used for $0.41 plus 3.99 shipping - a great deal.
There are also WWII maps you can download free from West Point which will help if get a book by a different author, but the Atkinson book has plenty of maps, and lots of detail.
    Good luck
    Regards
    Ray

If you are looking for the "axis side" what about the official four volume history of the North Africa war by the historical office of the Italian army? unfortunately not available in English but definitely scholarly and detailed and with plenty of good maps.

On the "more manageable" side I enjoyed "with Rommel in the desert" by Heinz Werner Schmidt a lot as a kid and it's still a interesting book 40+ years later.
