Hello all. After several years at the sister site ww2talk (where I am known as TTH), I have signed up here. I am a New Yorker now living in Boston, and I have both taught and written about the history of WWII. I have some interest in nearly all aspects and theaters of the war, so I will be looking at all sorts of topics and posts here. I am particularly interested in wartime weaponry, from small arms to tanks, artillery, and aircraft. I have heard good things about this site and I know some people here already. I look forward to learning more.
The sister site is great. There are some tremendously knowledgeable and helpful people over there, and the mods run a good tight ship. I have learned a lot on that site. The focus is primarily British and Commonwealth, but we get people from all over including some Yanks like myself and Slipdigit. Is that your old man in your icon?
Ha! Thanks, but if this was Minnesota or Montreal nobody would be making such a big deal about it. People here like to dramatize themselves.
It's actually a veteran that I met just last year with an amazing story. You can see his story in the first link on my signature. How is the weather up there in Boston?
The weather is moderating somewhat. The snow is still coming down, but less heavily. It's getting colder fast, though. As I told someone else, in other parts of the US and Canada this would not be thought such a big deal and people and the authorities would be handling it more smoothly.
Actually, the photo is from Japan, but you get the point. BTW, how is the Cassin Young, I've not been up to see that ship in ages.
I have not been on the Cassin Young, but I have seen it pretty close up. It looks pretty good to me, at least from the outside. There is also a WWII era cruiser down at Braintree. I have been on that, very instructive. You have no idea how cramped even the big ships of that era were unless you have been aboard one. All the space is devoted to guns, armor, fuel, ammo storage, wiring, etc., with the crew spaces just crammed in between. The B17s and B24s were just the same--all for their prime function and no comforts at all.
Yeah, I heard they were moving the USS Salem from Quincy to the Boston Harbor Shipyard & Marina. AFAIK, the move hasn't happened yet, but will take place sometime this year.
'Tis good to see you make the short walk over to here from there. I look forward to your learned contributions.
Welcome Aboard Terry! P.S. Contrary to the rumor, we only bash Monty on Patton's birthday. Hope that's not a deal breaker
