I am not a cartographer by any means, and maps are not my hobby, but I have always enjoyed looking at them. My fantasy (at least the one I can print on the forum) is to have one of those GIANT maps that SHAEF...USAAF...Royal Air Force used for bomber and fighter command. Like in this video at 8:30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idfMaeAk9z4&index=7&list=PLjiLIbYotzL2i5cnbRehgG6vV4tQNpxvi I have always wondered what happened to all those big, old, wall and table maps that The Army used.? I doubt my wife would dig it...but I would Love to have one of these things in my house.
As the great Ron Burgundy said, "Maps!, Maps! Maps! I like Maps!". Okay he actually said that about Scotch but I like both I share your desire and it kills me to think that after the War all those pieces of history were most likely tossed in the burn barrel.
I like looking at maps of Tasmania (Australian joke) - Thanks for the laugh Biak... Yo ucan always make your own maps up these days...even to to a printing company who will print out a big one from a file (of old maps)...you could then frame it...
I used to collect WW2 British maps a while ago, mainly the RAF navigational ones and the larger scale War Edition Ordnance Survey maps of Scotland. The latter are great for pinpointing where defensive lines were/are. Also got a British trench map from 1918 that I picked up as a teenager, but it's quite a large scale one.
You can print maps like that, Good Ol' Boy. You'll need a high resolution image and a print shop, like Office Depot or (most) commercial printing shops. I routinely print large images, 6 ft. x 9 ft. for my intarsia projects.
Wow...6x9 feet...!!...?? That is awesome. How much (approximately) does that cost...and, pardon my ignorance..... what are intarsia projects.? Thank You
Yeah...No shit. Not only were they large, but they were of a time that no longer exists. I bought a small (8x11 inch) map from Ebay. It was ripped from a 1941 World Atlas. I bought it because it was England and Europe and into Russia on one side.......and the other side was The Pacific Ocean.....Japan, Australia, China, Indo China, etc etc. Many of the places that are discussed in WWII scenarios. It is very helpful, and educational to see the lines of the day. I wish THAT map was 9' x 11' ...!!
Depends on who does it and if you want color or not. Best to ask before you place an order. Shopping around will definitely save you money. And this is intarsia. (Not mine, but similar.) The prints are used as patterns for these projects, glue to oak, maple, ash, ebony, etc.
I agree with this whole-heartedly. I'm constantly referring to the maps in books to orient myself. I'm not sure about owning a large map, though.
Not sure if this is really what you are looking for. They are not individual maps per se.....but I have the two books below that deal with info and maps of the day. good luck http://www.amazon.com/The-Times-Atlas-Second-World/dp/0060161787 http://www.amazon.com/War-Maps-September-August-Battle/dp/0517664704
